Shatner helps Priceline.com beam up to $1,000 stock frontier

FILE: Big Bang's Kaley Cuoco Teams Up with William Shatner for Second Priceline.com Ad. (PRNewsFoto/The Priceline Group) THIS CONTENT IS PROVIDE...

PR NEWSWIRE

William Shatner in a Priceline.com ad. The company's stock is in sight of breaking the S&P 500's $1,000 price barrier.

To boldly go where no stock has gone before...

Driven at warp speed by Star Trek's Capt. Kirk (aka TV pitchman William Shatner), Priceline.com is set to become the S&P 500's first ever $1,000 stock.

That astronomical price is a result of not only domestic growth but gains in market share in countries slow to transfer over to online travel bookings.

"Priceline's comeback is almost as remarkable as Shatner's," said Simon Baker of Baker Avenue Asset Management. "Their recent blowout numbers were particularly impressive. Crank the dial to 1,000 and 'Beam me up, Scotty.'"

Shares of Priceline are up more than 70 percent since bringing back Shatner of "Star Trek" fame back as its star in U.S. advertisements one year ago (after "killing" him off seven months prior in an ad).?

Maybe the thought of breaking through the $1,000 price barrier made investors nervous on Monday as the stock actually fell over $10, or 1.1 percent, on the Nasdaq. Still, at $959.45 per share, the four-digit price is still closer than a new galaxy for the Starship Enterprise.

The stock went into warp drive last week after the company reported net income jumped 24 percent in the second quarter, as travel bookings climbed 38 percent. Even more impressive, international bookings surged 44 percent in the period, marking the fifth quarter in a row of 40 to 45 percent growth for that metric, according to Piper Jaffray.

(Read more:The Street's fave small firm is crushing the market)

At least 17 Wall Street analysts came out with glowing reports after the earnings release, raising their share price targets to above $1,000. The average target price of those analysts is $1,133.

Standard & Poor's confirmed there has never been a $1,000 a share member in the 56-year history of the S&P 500, even during the dot-com bubble that gave birth to Priceline. Of course back then, many companies would split their shares before getting close to that milestone.

That financial maneuver has grown out of practice as companies try to emulate Warren Buffett's and Steve Jobs' dislike of stock splits for encouraging speculation. Currently, Google?whose founders also don't believe in splitting stock?has the second-highest stock price in the index at $884 a share.

While an astute acquisition of fare aggregator Kayak.com will help drive Priceline's growth in the U.S., it's the company's international sites like Booking.com, TravelJigsaw and Agoda that will be the biggest driver of future earnings growth, according to the analysts.

(Read more: Ford hits the fast lane: Shares could race up 30%)

Goldman Sachs sees adjusted earnings per share jumping 11 percent in 2014 and 14 percent in 2015 as Europe stabilizes.

"Priceline is one of the few stocks on a monster run in 2013 where the company has grown earnings just as quickly as the stock has appreciated," said Enis Taner, global macro editor for RiskReversal.com. "In the past three years earnings have tripled and the stock has tripled. This stock is no bubble."

The one concern analysts cited was overspending on marketing expenses, especially in Europe as Priceline tries to steal from existing sites or be the first stop for users switching from offline to online hotel bookings. But if the company can keep margins under control, the trip to $1,000 should be coming in at least the next 12 months, analysts said.

Ironically, it may be its pitchman who needs a raise. As the stock rocketed higher last week, Shatner tweeted;

"Congratulations to @Priceline on their stock price. Wish I hadn't sold my stock all those years ago."

Frugal Family Tree: Easy Recipes for Family Meals with Oatmeal ...

For my family I like to save money when we shop for groceries. I think if we can save on food we can have money for extra things and fun adventures. I look at a sales ad for a store, check my coupons and plan a weekly meal list based on the deals. This week we are shopping at Smart and Final for items on sale to make easy recipes for family meals. I see that the First Street brand has many items on sale and a $2 off offer when you buy 4 participating products. We always buy First Street items and Smart and Final so I decided to plan a day around eating Oatmeal since my son loves it and it is on sale.?

My little shopping buddy always likes to help pick out items in the store. We plan to have Fruit and Cream Oatmeal with grapes and orange juice for breakfast, Oatmeal Cookies and peanut butter cookies for lunch at the park and Oatmeal crusted chicken for dinner with friends to watch some movies. We have a very fun day planned. My son convinced me in the store well insisted is more like it that we change my plan from Oatmeal Raisin cookies to Chocolate Chip Oatmeal cookies with almonds. He loves chocolate!

For Breakfast we are having Blueberry Fruit and Cream Oatmeal with banana slices on top, green grapes that we got a great deal on and orange juice. A healthy and easy start to the day.

When we were in the store and my son realized we were making cookies it was all he could talk about until we made them. He always likes to help in the kitchen. Sometimes its just trying the ingredients for quality control of course. I have many First Street baking items already in my cupboards so I only needed to buy the Quick Oats and Chocolate Chips. I have always loved making cookies from scratch. As a teenager my family would ask me to make my awesome chocolate chip cookies, it always made me feel special to bake it for them. For my son I add the oatmeal for texture and the health benefits.
I made simple First Street Peanut Butter Sandwiches topped with green grapes to serve with my Oatmeal Chocolate Chip with Almonds Cookies. We had a mini picnic at the park benches in between my son playing in the splash pad and playground. We recently found this park and we love it. On the hot summer days we are able to have him play in the water. My son even shared some of our cookies with a few kids at the park. He wanted to pet their little dog and offered a cookie for a pet. He is a smart cookie!

When we got home from the park my son was exhausted from playing in the sun. While my son took a nap I planned out the dinner I was going to make for a few friends that were coming over to watch some movies. I am making Oatmeal Crusted Chicken and serving it with spinach couscous.
For my recipe I pulsed in the blender the quick oats and spices so the oatmeal would stick to the chicken and cook more evenly. My son was awake by the time I was ready to use the blender and loves to help push the button. Next I dipped the chicken in an egg wash before covering it in the oatmeal crust. I drizzled the top of the chicken with butter before going into the oven to help the oatmeal brown. You can use your favorite spice mix like I did or add the ones directly from the recipe. My spice mix contains all the spices on the ingredients list.

Oatmeal Crusted Chicken

Ingredients

• 1 cup?regular oats
• 1/2 teaspoon?salt
• 1/4 teaspoon?dried rubbed sage
• 1/4 teaspoon?dried summer savory or parsley
• 1/4 teaspoon?dried thyme
• 1/4 teaspoon?black pepper
• 1 egg
• 4 Chicken Leg Quarters
• 2 tablespoons?butter or stick margarine, melted

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 450?.
2. Combine oats, salt, and next spice ingredients (salt through pepper) in a food processor or blender, process until oats are finely chopped. Place oat mixture in a shallow dish; place egg ?in a medium bowl. Dip chicken in whisked egg, and coat in oat mixture. Place chicken in baking pan and drizzle butter over chicken. Bake at 450? for 45 minutes or until done.

We had a wonderful day spending time as a family enjoying meals, a day at the park and movie night with friends. My recipes we all planned around a simple ingredient that was on sale. Have you had a day with one ingredient as your meals inspiration?

Sinkhole causes resort villa to partially collapse

CLERMONT, Fla. (AP) ? It sounded like a thunderstorm as windows broke and the ground shook, but visitors who were awakened from their rooms at a villa near Orlando soon realized the building was starting to collapse.

Parts of the Summer Bay Resort building were swallowed by a 100-foot sinkhole early Monday. All 105 guests were evacuated from the building, and no injuries were reported. Two neighboring buildings also were evacuated as a precaution. Inspectors remained at the scene Monday to determine whether those buildings would be safe to re-enter, and whether any belongings from the collapsed structure would be recovered.

The development's president said there were no earlier signs that a sinkhole was developing. He said the resort underwent testing when it was built about 15 years ago, showing stable ground.

Israel markets settler homes before Palestinian prisoner release

By Jeffrey Heller

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel moved forward on Sunday with plans to build nearly 1,200 new homes for Jewish settlers, holding fast to a defiant settlement policy just days before its expected release of Palestinian prisoners.

Israel has made a push on settlements since the resumption on July 30 of U.S.-brokered talks on Palestinian statehood, signaling its intention to continue to build in major enclaves it wants to keep in any future peace deal.

Israeli media, in unconfirmed reports, have suggested Sunday's housing plans were disclosed to Washington in advance and were aimed partly at overcoming opposition within the pro-settlement cabinet to prisoner releases designed to spur negotiations halted three years ago.

"I saw that important newspapers reported this morning that there is purportedly some kind of coordination regarding the construction," Housing Minister Uri Ariel, a member of the ultranationalist Jewish Home party, said on Army Radio.

"I very much believe the newspapers and the media but I don't know whether I can authenticate this," he said, calling the "release of terrorists" unjust.

Israel's Housing Ministry said on its website that tenders were issued for building 793 new apartments in areas of the West Bank that Israel annexed after capturing the territory and the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Plots for the construction of 394 more units were being sold in Ariel, Efrat, Maale Adumim and Betar, settlements in areas Israel has said it aims to retain in any land-for-peace accord.

While condemning settlement expansion, Palestinians have stopped short of threatening outright to abandon the peace negotiations, which are due to go into a second round on Wednesday in Jerusalem after a session in Washington.

"The international community must stand with this peace process and must stand shoulder to shoulder with us and hold Israel accountable for its continuing settlement activities," Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

Israeli Finance Minister Yair Lapid, whose centrist party is right-wing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's biggest partner in the governing coalition, called the decision to issue the settlement housing tenders "unhelpful to the peace process".

PRISONER RELEASE

Israel is expected to free, on Tuesday or Wednesday, a first group of 26 Palestinian prisoners out of a total of 104 Arab inmates whose release was approved last month to help restart the talks.

An Israeli cabinet committee was to convene later on Sunday to finalize a list of 26 prisoners for the first release, as families of those killed in Palestinian attacks appealed against the move. The High Court usually opts not to intervene.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had demanded the release of prisoners held since before a 1993 interim peace accord took effect. Israel has jailed thousands more Palestinians since then, many for carrying out deadly attacks.

Drawing Palestinian anger, Israel's military-run Civil Administration in the West Bank gave preliminary approval on Thursday for the construction of more than 800 new settler homes - some of them in isolated settlements - but said it needed government approval before building could begin.

Most world powers regard all the settlements as illegal and Palestinians say the enclaves could deny them a viable and contiguous state.

Some 500,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem amid 2.5 million Palestinians. Israel withdrew in 2005 from the Gaza Strip, which is now governed by Hamas Islamists opposed to permanent co-existence with the Jewish state.

?Kickalicious? YouTube Star Makes NFL Pre-Season Debut

Back in April we told you that the Detroit Lions had signed Havard Rugland after seeing his infamous ?Kickalicious? YouTube video and offering him a trial. The Norwegian hopeful had joined up with the Lions for pre-season training camp and after impressing at every opportunity he was given a shot in the Lions pre-season game against the New York Jets, taking over for veteran kicker David Akers at half time. While everybody in the stadium was hoping he would do well, he made the transition from YouTube to the NFL look relatively easy.

Rugland nailed 2 field goals, one from 49 yards and one from 50, to the delight of his team-mates. It?s clear that he has become not only a fan-favourite, but a well liked member of the team. While his debut was impressive, it is unlikely that the will usurp David Akers as starting kicker due to Akers? extensive NFL r?sum?, but if he continues this form there is a good chance that he can find a starting job in the NFL. We?re rooting for you Havard!

India's hinterland today shows more promise than ever before. And similar to the role played in cities, the outsourcing industry can be a catalyst for this new stage of India's growth.

Decades of steady albeit slow development of the physical infrastructure has created a wide canvas of opportunity.

Look at the statistics: Highways today run 65,569 kilometers compared to 33,700 kilometers in 1990; telecom penetration is closing on 500 million subscribers versus 18.6 million in 1990; and 507,451 villages have electricity today.

With the growing availability of competent talent over a long time, we have excelled in supporting the business and technology requirements of the world. Perhaps we are the only country in the world which turns out 3.5 million graduates and post graduates annually in engineering, accountancy, science and the liberal arts. Literacy grew from 18% in 1947 to 65% in 2001, but a crucial underlying demographic fact is that 80% of the 15-24 year old population is literate! Numbers reflect a story not only from a talent perspective, but also in our social infrastructure that is being built.

The Growth 1.0 economy thus posted an average growth rate of more than 7% in the decade since 1997, reducing poverty by about 10 percentage points. India achieved 9.6% GDP growth in 2006, 9.0% in 2007, and 6.6% in 2008, significantly expanding even through late 2008 while the financial crisis raged globally.

These numbers stand testimony to the development of physical and social infrastructure, and continue unabated. Economic development grows once infrastructure growth picks up speed. And going forward that's precisely where the IT and BPO industry can play the role of a fulcrum, with our increasingly younger population as the lever.

We need to embrace the growth taking place in the so-called Tier 3 and 4 towns.

Tier 3 would be centers that have the capacity to provide a workforce and a potential resource pool to a BPO. Such centers will have college education, electricity, infrastructure available locally. The customer's product potential or demand may also be high, although in all likelihood it is yet to be tapped. Aurangabad, Lucknow, Goa, Mangalore and Mysore would be examples of Tier 3 ? towns that have yet to establish footprints as BPO centers but have substantial locally educated population and related infrastructure.

?If India lived in her villages at independence, 62 years on - a vast young population lives in these sorts of towns.? Tier 4 would be towns like Nanded, Davangere, Belgaum, ? again substantial locally educated population who migrate to larger urban centers for jobs. The resource pool is not as large as Tier 3 but can be effectively harnessed to the "100-seater" concept, which refers to the size of lowcost yet economically sound rural BPO.

The steady deregulation of the economy starting 1991, and growing globalization, has created a vast Indian hinterland today.

What is seeding this hotbed for many opportunities?

Strategy to attract investment and infrastructure: Governments across our states are competing to attract investments and ensure they get the best companies, providing them with tax concessions, subsidies and other benefits. For example, did you know that Rajasthan cornered planned investments worth 690.52 billion rupees ($14.17 billion) from India Inc. in 2008-09 for modernizing its infrastructure? Karnataka has announced government grants for rural BPOs in the form of capital investment subsidy up to 2 million rupees per 100 seater, financial support of 10,000 rupees and 5,000 rupees per employee respectively for manpower training, and as subsidy for rentals and internet connectivity.

Broader availability of skills: Across our states, science, liberal arts, engineering and management institutions impart the higher education that has been churning out the future job force. Till today, most educated people had to migrate to the Tier 1 cities, for jobs. But what if we looked at these educated people as a resource pool for jobs right where they live in Tier 3 and 4 towns? And remember that IT and BPO has already driven the growth of 3-4 times as many jobs for support staff, such as security, cooks, drivers and helpers.

Growing demand for telecom, retail, automotive and financial services: These 'new' sectors are providing direct and indirect employment to millions. To drive these businesses in the hinterland will require local talent. I am suggesting that this already exists, and it is essential for us to participate in this growth story. The IT-BPO industry will be a catalyst for driving the Growth 2.0 story on the back of these other sectors. It's a virtuous cycle: more investment, more support infrastructure created, further spurring economic development in these regions.

Where do we play a role?

It is obvious that India's technology infrastructure remains a challenge - and yet this is the third leg of the infrastructure fulcrum that will define the opportunity. Its penetration today remains low. We have already achieved much with the availability of inexpensive telephony and Internet during Growth 1.0. A multitude of industries are waiting to reach their customers in Growth 2.0. Here's a charter for action: a) understand and recognize growth areas; b) invest in preemptively creating the social infrastructure needed to propel them and c) deploy innovative solutions leveraging technology.

This charter will drive the development of the hinterland supported on the back of growth of domestic consumption of products and services. Public-private cooperation will be needed to move the educated demographic to a more employable one. The apprenticeship and internship models that several states are promoting could be the starting point. These are neither marginal nor tentative growth perspectives, but mainstream action needed to help lift and sustain India's growth over the next few decades.

For some time now, we have catered to the world's needs to taste success in the IT-BPO industry. We have imbibed best practices and implemented cutting edge technology to provide superior delivery. We have the tools to be relevant to home grown business and expand the scope of our services. The opportunity could be so gargantuan that the landscape of our industry and, more so, that of India, could change in unimagined ways.

Plateau baseball club wins three at American Legion Tournament

In early June, there were 56 American Legion baseball teams scattered around Washington, all hoping to advance to the state championships in Walla Walla. By late July, only a handful had seen their dreams come true.

Included in that select group was the Plateau Baseball Club that eventually posted a 27-15 season record and tied for the third-sixth placing in the AA Legion tournament. The tourney was staged July 27 through Aug. 1 at two sites in Walla Walla.

The team brought together 10 players from White River High School and three from Enumclaw High. The squad was coached by Mike Williams ? White River?s varsity coach ? and his son, Connor.

?We just kinda ran out of gas,? Williams said, following a 13-3 loss to the host Walla Walla team on July 31 that saw the PBC?s tourney run come to a close.

Williams had nothing but praise for his summer squad.

?What a tremendous group of young men to work with, all competed every inning,? he wrote in an email. ?Great friendships were created and a lifetime of memories over the summer for sure.?

Being involved in 42 games following the regular high school season helps coaches as well as players, Williams added. ?Connor and I really learned a lot too... more innings really helped us fine-tune our offensive and defensive philosophy.?

The Plateau team won three and lost two in Walla Walla, with pitcher Sean Klapperich picking up two of the victories on the mound; he allowed just three runs in 13 innings of work. Christian Sines Sam Rabb and Matt Salisbury hit the ball well all week, Williams said, while noting that Cody Cloud continued his high on-base percentage; during the course of the season, he got on base 42 times without hitting the ball ? drawing 22 bases on balls and getting hit by 18 pitches. During state play, he reached base nine times in 14 plate appearances.

Williams also singled out Mitchell Webster and Salisbury for their consistently solid play in the outfield.

Here?s a rundown of the Plateau Baseball Club?s five-day tournament run.

Saturday: The local squad defeated Lakeside Recovery 5-3.

Sunday: Things started well, as the PBC jumped on top of Mount Spokane 8-0 after three innings of play. The team from eastern Washington caught fire, though, and rolled to an 18-11 triumph.

Monday: A 4-1 victory over Colville guaranteed the PBC a spot in the top eight. It was a big game for Buchanan, who went the distance on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out five while allowing only one walk. At the plate, he had three hits, scored one run and drove in another. Also scoring runs were Webster, who had two hits, Brandon Henke and Sam Rabb.

Tuesday: The winning continued with a 6-3 verdict over Mason, a team from the Gray?s Harbor area.

Wednesday: A loser-out contest resulted in the 11-3 loss to the host team. The Plateau team was still in contention after three full innings of play, trailing just 4-2, but the Bruins exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.

In the third frame, PBC scored twice. Cloud walked, advanced on an infield play and scored on a Webster single. Webster motored to third thanks to Walla Walla errors, them scored on a passed ball.

PBC managed just five hits off Walla Walla ace Zach Zehner, one each by Webster, Sines, Klapperich, Henke and Baker McCullough.

Voice over IP is ? | What is this ? - Top definitions

Voice over IP is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, IP communications, and broadband phone service.

The term Internet telephony specifically refers to the provisioning of communications services over the public Internet, rather than via the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The steps and principles involved in originating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony, and involve signaling, channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network, however, the digital information is packetized and transmission occurs as Internet Protocol (IP) packets over a packet-switched network. Such transmission entails careful considerations about resource management different from time-division multiplexing (TDM) networks.

Early providers of voice over IP services offered business models and technical solutions that mirrored the architecture of the legacy telephone network. Second generation providers, such as Skype, have built closed networks for private user bases, offering the benefit of free calls and convenience, while potentially charging for access to other communication networks, such as the PSTN. This has limited the freedom of users to mix-and-match third-party hardware and software. Third generation providers, such as Google Talk have adopted the concept of federated VoIP ? which is a departure from the architecture of the legacy networks. These solutions typically allow dynamic interconnection between users on any two domains on the Internet when a user wishes to place a call.

However, a majority of DSL providers use only one VC for each customer, even those with bundled VoIP service. Every Ethernet frame must be completely transmitted before another can begin. If a 2nd VC were established, given high priority and reserved for VoIP, then a low priority data packet could be suspended in mid-transmission and a VoIP packet sent right away on the high priority VC. Then the link would pick up the low priority VC where it left off. Because ATM links are multiplexed on a cell-by-cell basis, a high priority packet would have to wait at most 53 byte times to begin transmission. There would be no need to reduce the interface MTU and accept the resulting increase in higher layer protocol overhead, and no need to abort a low priority packet and resend it later.

Indexes edge up as Fed slowdown fears ebb

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are ending slightly higher after a report of tepid U.S. economic growth raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue its stimulus program.

The government lowered its estimate for growth in the first three months of the year to 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent.

Stocks slid last week on concerns that the Fed might slow its bond purchases.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21 points to 15,324 Thursday, or 0.1 percent. The Dow was up 95 points in the afternoon, then faded in the last hour.

The Standard & Poor?s 500 rose six to 1,654, or 0.4 percent. The Nasdaq rose 23 points to 3,491.

Three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.5 billion shares.

Scott keeps rolling as rain lets up at Oak Hill

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) ? The rain let up at soggy Oak Hill.

Adam Scott kept right on rolling.

The co-leader from the opening round pulled ahead of everyone else with another flurry of birdies Friday at the PGA Championship, taking advantage of a course softened even more by morning showers.

Scott, who opened with a 5-under 65, pushed his score to 7 under through 12 holes ? two shots clear of the field. He had four birdies, most notably sinking a 40-foot putt at the second, though a couple of bogeys kept him from stretching his lead even more.

The early starters had to break out the umbrellas and rain gear for showers that turned heavy at times, though the course seemed to be draining well and there no stoppage of play.

For a while, the final major of the year looked more like a British Open.

In fact, England's Luke Donald longed for the other side of the Atlantic.

"I much prefer the weather in the UK," he quipped, walking off the 10th green.

Really, he had no reason to complain. The dreary weather provided another chance to attack the soft greens that made Thursday seem more like a regular tour event than a test of major proportions.

No one took advantage like Webb Simpson. He was 7 under through his first 15 holes and making a run at the major championship scoring record before a bogey at the seventh ? his 16th hole of the round ? stemmed his momentum. No one has ever posted a round lower than 63 in one of golf's biggest events.

Still, the surge left the former U.S. Open winner just three strokes behind Scott, lumped in a group at 4 under that also included Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and David Hearn.

The Aussie, starting on the back side, chipped in at No. 10 for a birdie that quickly gave him the outright lead on Jim Furyk, who also shot 65 on Thursday. The 43-year-old American had an afternoon tee time, when the weather was expected to turn sunny ? and remain that way through the rest of the weekend.

Many wondered if the PGA of America might try to boost Oak Hill's defenses with tougher hole locations.

"The golf course can easily be protected with pins," Graeme McDowell said after opening with a 70. "They can soon tuck these pins away and make this a difficult test."

On Day 1, Tiger Woods hardly looked a player capable of breaking an 0-for-17 drought in the majors since his 2008 triumph at the U.S. Open.

The world's top-ranked player closed with a double-bogey to finish with a 71 and went into Friday with a staggering 49 players standing between him and the top spot on the leaderboard. He figured to face a more-daunting challenge by the time he teed off in the afternoon.

Others ripped through a course that was very much there for the taking, the birdies falling into the cup at an alarming rate.

Scott strung together five in a row on the way to his opening 65. Furyk had a bogey-free round going until a stumble at the final hole left him with a 65 as well. Westwood and unheralded Canadian David Hearn shot 66, and a total of 35 players broke par.

That compared to only 10 rounds in the 60s when the PGA Championship was at Oak Hill a decade ago.

While Woods came in as the overwhelming favorite, Scott increasingly looks like a player who will add more major titles to the one he finally got in a Masters playoff back in April.

Three weeks ago, he had the Sunday lead on the back nine at Muirfield before fading. In the last major of the year, there were times he looked unstoppable.

"Just got on a bit of a roll and hit a few shots close," Scott said before the second round. "I didn't have too much putting to do. You've got to take advantage when it happens, because it doesn't happen too much in the majors."

Woody Austin would be happy just to make it to the weekend after being assessed a four-stroke penalty for carrying an extra club.

Golfers are allowed to carry 14 clubs in their bags. Austin discovered the extra club while playing the third hole, removed it from the bag and reported the infraction to an official.

The rules call for a two-stroke penalty for each hole played with an extra club, up to a maximum of four strokes. Austin added two strokes to his score for the first and second holes.

While rare, Austin isn't the first player to receive such a penalty. Ian Woosnam was in contention at the 2001 British Open when he began the final round with 15 clubs. He took a two-stroke penalty and finished third.
