Benedick Fraass, Ph.D., FAAPM, FASTRO, FACR, presented with the William D. Coolidge Award by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine

LOS ANGELES (July 31, 2013) Benedick Fraass, PhD, FAAPM, FASTRO, FACR, received the highest honor from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine the William D. Coolidge Award for his distinguished career achievements in medical physics, including his pioneering work in radiation oncology.

The William D. Coolidge Award is the most prestigious award of the association and has been given to important medical physicists such as William Coolidge, the inventor of the modern X-ray tube, and Harold Johns, who led the development and clinical use of the first Cobalt machines for radiotherapy.

"The William D. Coolidge Award credits those whose innovation and creativity have revolutionized the field of medical physics an award only suited for a prestigious leader like Dr. Fraass," said Steven Piantadosi, MD, PhD, director of the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute and the Phase ONE Foundation Distinguished Chair. "Dr. Fraass has dedicated both his mind and talent to radiation oncology providing more efficient treatment to thousands of patients across the world."

Fraass, vice chair for Research and professor and director of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, is a renowned medical physicist specializing in radiation oncology, imaging-based treatment planning, computer-controlled treatment delivery and clinical studies of radiation oncology treatment for cancer.

Fraass was instrumental in the creation of 3D treatment planning in the 1980s and early 1990s and helped pioneer the development of 3D conformal therapy, a technique in which beams of radiation are shaped to match a tumor during treatment, sparing nearby normal tissue.

Additionally, Fraass led the team that implemented the first routine clinical use of 3D treatment planning, a now-commonplace software tool used to design and implement more accurate radiation therapy. Fraass and colleagues also created the first radiation oncology clinical dose escalation trials using conformal therapy in 1987, as well as doing pioneering work in computer-controlled treatment delivery. Fraass continues his efforts to improve patient safety.

"It is an honor to join the elite group of past Coolidge award recipients," said Fraass. "The innovations our group developed have changed the field of radiation oncology, and have improved the cancer treatment for a great many patients. These improvements were only possible due to the teamwork of a dedicated collaboration of medical physicists, physicians, computer scientists, therapists and engineers, and I'm honored to represent all these people in accepting the award."

Fraass has been principal investigator of many National Cancer Institute grants, including the NCI-funded program project grant "Optimization of High Dose Conformal Therapy," which was funded from 1993 to 2011 and has authored more than 205 publications. Fraass serves as co-chair of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine Research Committee, the National Radiation Oncology Registry, the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise-Radiation Oncology effort and the Radiation Oncology Safety Stakeholders Initiative. He is a fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the American College of Radiology. In 2011, Fraass was named professor emeritus of the University of Michigan, where he served as director of the Radiation Oncology Physics Division from 1984 to 2011.

Better US economic growth, earnings drive stocks

NEW YORK (AP) ? Steady growth in the U.S. economy and higher company earnings helped push the stock market back to record levels Wednesday.

The economy, while still struggling to pick up momentum following the Great Recession, grew at a faster pace than economists had forecast in the second quarter. There was also an encouraging report on hiring.

The news on growth was encouraging, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, because it suggested the economy is recovering strongly enough to grow without stimulus from the Federal Reserve. The central bank is buying $85 billion of bonds a month to hold down interest rates and encourage borrowing.

"We did get some surprisingly strong economic numbers today," said Cardillo. "The market is taking this news optimistically. It points to the economy not needing crutches anymore."

The U.S. economy expanded at an annual rate of 1.7 percent from April through June as businesses spent more and the federal government cut less spending, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists had expected growth of 1 percent for the period, according to the data provider FactSet.

Investors were also waiting for word from the Fed later Wednesday. The U.S. central bank will release an updated policy statement after concluding its latest two-day meeting.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 58 points, or 0.4 percent, to 15,576 as of 12:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Dow is on its way to beating its previous record high close of 15,567 reached on July 23.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose seven points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,694. The Nasdaq composite gained 16 points, or 0.6 percent, to 3,636.

On the last trading day of July, the Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 5.3 percent for the month. If it holds those gains, the index will log its best month since Oct. 2011. The stock market has surged in July after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke assured investors that the central bank was in no hurry to withdraw its stimulus.

Investors also reacted to the economic growth report by selling bonds. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.67 percent from 2.61 percent the day before, and is close to its highest level in two years. The note's yield, which moves inversely to its price, has risen this year on signs that the economy is improving.

Investors tend to sell ultra-safe U.S. government bonds, forcing yields to go higher, when they anticipate a pickup in economic growth. Investors are also expecting that improving U.S. growth will prompt the Federal Reserve to ease back on its bond-buying program.

The encouraging news on hiring came ahead of the government's monthly jobs survey due out Friday.

U.S. businesses created a healthy 200,000 jobs this month, payroll company ADP said, as companies hired at the fastest pace since December. ADP also raised its estimate of the number of jobs the private sector created in June.

Investors were also tracking company earnings.

Comcast rose $2.16, or 5.8 percent, to $39.42 after the parent company of the NBC network and Universal Studios reported earnings and revenue that exceed analysts' expectations in the second quarter.

Software company Symantec, which makes the Norton antivirus software, surged after the company reported earnings and revenue that beat analysts' forecasts. The stock rose $1.84, or 7.6 percent, to $26.19.

Analysts are currently forecasting that second-quarter earnings rose an average of 4.75 percent for S&P 500 companies, according to S&P Capital IQ. That would be the slowest rate of growth in three quarters.

In commodities trading, the price of oil rose $1.17, or 1.1 percent, to $104.25 a barrel. Gold dropped $14.50, or 1.1 percent, to $1,310.60 an ounce.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Air Products & Chemicals rose $2.97, or 2.8 percent, to $108.50 after the Wall Street journal reported that activist investor William Ackman had bought a 9.8 percent stake in the gas company.

? Herbalife rose $5.16, or 8.7 percent, to $65.25 after CNBC reported that the veteran hedge fund investor George Soros had taken a stake in the company. Herbalife has been at the center of a battle between investors Ackman and Carl Ichan, who are taking opposing positions in the stock.

Cory Booker not headed to Iowa, despite reports

Cory Booker to Iowa? Not according to his campaign.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Senate candidate denied a report Monday that Booker was headed to the pivotal presidential caucus state for a speech next month.

As The Daily Beast first reported, the University of Iowa?s website said Booker was to speak to the student body Aug. 29 during the school?s ?welcome back week? festivities.

That?s barely two weeks after the Aug. 13 Democratic primary for the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Frank Lautenberg, who died in June. The winner of the primary heads to the general election set for Oct. 16.

But Kevin Griffis, a spokesman for Booker, told Yahoo News his boss was ?absolutely not going? to Iowa.

?It is not on the campaign?s calendar and never was,? Griffis said, adding that the campaign had reached out to the University of Iowa to remove the event from its website.

It?s unclear how the event was scheduled. A spokesperson for the University of Iowa did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the past, Booker worked with an agency to book private speeches ? which earned him $1.3 million over the past five years. But the campaign said all future paid speeches had been canceled when he declared his candidacy for the Senate.

While Booker is expected to easily win next month?s Democratic primary, the Iowa speech ? which, it must be noted, was to be followed by a screening of ?The Hangover Part III? ? could have possibly backfired politically for the Newark mayor.

Booker?s rivals have criticized him for his uncanny ability to generate media coverage, implying he?s running more out of ego than for a desire to help New Jersey voters. Last month, the Lautenberg family threw its backing behind Rep. Frank Pallone in the Democratic primary, saying that, like their father, he ?knows that to be effective you must put New Jersey and your principles first, not your own glory.?

It was an obvious dig at Booker, who angered Lautenberg earlier this year by jumping into the primary before the senator had announced his political plans for 2014.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says gas prices have fallen

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Gas prices have been declining over the past week after increasing steadily earlier in July.

In a weekly report Sunday on the price of gas, AAA Mid-Atlantic says the national average dropped to $3.65 per gallon on Friday. That's a 2.5-cent drop in the past week.

But the cost is still 11 cents more expensive than a month ago and 16 cents more expensive than a year ago.

AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesman John Townsend says the decline in gas prices over the past seven days offers motorists a small sign of relief ahead of August vacations.

The average price in the District of Columbia was $3.89 on Sunday. Maryland drivers were paying $3.69 on average, and Delaware drivers were paying $3.67. Virginia had the lowest price in the region at $3.48.

Must Watch: Alleged Border Wall Is Missing the Actual Wall Part, Creating Unobstructed Pathway From Mexico to Texas Town

In Penitas, Texas. It might be less than 200 yards. Whatever the distance, it's a nice, easy stroll completed in three minutes. Some people have to walk further to get their mail.

Brandon Darby takes you on a very short trip, step by step on foot, from the Mexican border to the alleged border fence which is missing the actual fence part. This wall was "completed" years ago. Keep this in mind when you hear their promises of doubling border security or creating a "technological virtual wall." Yeah, I'm looking at a "virtual wall" right now. What I see here is a deliberate sabotage of the public will. Posted by: Ace at 12:29 PM

Apple watchdog attack may have let the cheap iPhone cat out the bag

Apple's facing more criticism over worker conditions as a watchdog report, published today, says that things just aren't too great over at the factory of supplier Pegatron.

China Labor Watch reports labour violations galore, including poor working and living conditions, and the use of underage employees, following similar previous criticisms of Apple's other major supplier, Foxconn.

However, in the details of the CLW report, there's also some explicit acknowledgement of Apple's fabled budget iPhone which is currently putting the rumour mill into overdrive.

"During the period of our investigation, Pegatron Shanghai had begun producing the cheap iPhone," says the report. "This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple."

Devil in the details

While we certainly wouldn't call this cold hard evidence, it's probably more credible than the barrage of pictures claiming to be of the budget iPhone.

The plastic handset is referenced multiple times through the report. Speaking to VentureBeat, China Labor Watch comfirmed that the report was written in July, but had been compiled starting from March.

On the weekend even saw a photo claiming to be the phone's packaging, outing the handset as the iPhone 5C. If you don't buy that though, you can see what the TechRadar team reckons Apple's cheaper handset might be called when it arrives.

Mexico's navy vice admiral killed in ambush, authorities say

MORELIA (Mexico) Mexican authorities say gunmen have ambushed and killed a high-ranking navy official and the officer escorting him.

Prosecutors in the western state of Michoacan say Sunday's attack on Vice Admiral Carlos Miguel Salazar happened on a dirt road near the town of Churintzio.

Prosecutors spokesman Alejandro Arellano says the commander's driver apparently took the dirt road because the main highway had been closed. He says an officer serving as the admiral's bodyguard was also killed. He adds that a woman and man were injured.

Navy spokesman Jorge Vazquez says only that two members of the force have died but hasn't released their names.

Since Tuesday, gunmen apparently working for the Knights Templar cartel have been staging a series of attacks on federal police convoys, killing at least four officers.

Canada's nurses are saving a seat for the federal government

NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON, July 26, 2013 /CNW/ - As the premiers wrap up their summer Council of the Federation meeting in Niagara, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) are reminding the federal government that they still have an important role to play in uniting Canada's health-care system across the regions to ultimately improve the health of Canadians. The premiers were previously together in Niagara in 2004 alongside the federal government to sign the health accord, where both levels agreed on "collaboration between all governments, working together in common purpose to meet the evolving health-care needs of Canadians." CNA and CFNU note the progress that premiers have made on health-care transformation, but are calling on the federal government to bring consistency and unity across the provinces and territories.

"To guarantee every Canadian the same access to the same quality health care ? regardless of who they are or where they live ? the federal government must assume a leadership role," said CNA president Barb Mildon. "Health providers and the premiers have made progress in identifying local innovations that can be scaled up into national solutions, but real progress depends on actually implementing these solutions consistently across our country.? We're eager to work with the new health minister, Rona Ambrose, to present priority outcomes ? such as a reduction in diabetes, availability of electronic health records, 24/7 access to primary care ? that require focused collaboration to achieve better system performance and better health."

The health accord, established in 2004 between the federal and provincial/territorial governments, is set to expire in 2014 and a replacement has not been established. When the Health Council of Canada reported in 2011 that only about half of the targets in the accord were being met, a spokesperson for then-health minister Leona Aglukkaq confirmed there would be a renewal at some point and that the federal government "will work collaboratively with the provinces and territories to renew the health accord." An unexpected development came later in 2011 when finance minister Jim Flaherty announced health transfers will continue to increase at six per cent a year until 2016-2017, after which they would be based on growth in Canada's GDP and inflation.

"Demonstrating a commitment to Canadians cannot be done through signing a cheque alone," said CFNU president Linda Silas. "The federal government signed up for a collaborative relationship with the provinces and territories in 2004. Almost ten years later, there are still major gaps in the health-care system that must be addressed in order to guarantee quality, safe care for all Canadians. We urge the federal government to re-commit to an investment of effort and resources to help us build a better universal, public health system that will lead to better health outcomes for all Canadians."

To sustain and improve Canada's publicly funded, not-for-profit health-care system, CNA and CFNU recommend three priorities where the federal government can contribute to health-care transformation:

  • strengthen?accountability?by establishing health and system improvement goals based on a series of priority quality indicators with targets across the health-care system
  • ensure the capacity to meet the needs of Canadians by stabilizing and securing Canada's?health workforce?today and for the long term
  • improve?health equity?and reduce health disparity by investing in services and programs such as greater access to?community-based health services?(e.g., primary care, outpatient care and home care) and a universal pharmacare program

CNA is the national professional voice of registered nurses in Canada. A federation of 11 provincial and territorial nursing associations and colleges representing nearly 150,000 registered nurses, CNA advances the practice and profession of nursing to improve health outcomes and strengthen Canada's publicly funded not-for-profit health system.

CFNU represents close to 200,000 nurses and student nurses. Our members work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, community health care, and our homes. The CFNU speaks to all levels of government, other health care stakeholders and the public about evidence-based policy options to improve patient care, working conditions and our public health care system.

California Woman Charged With 30 Counts Of Animal Cruelty

Indio, CA ? A Southern California woman has been charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty and failure to care for her dogs.

Bernadette Mary Schwenn was charged with 10 felony counts and 20 misdemeanor counts after more than two dozen dogs were found sick, dead, or dying at her property in Riverside County?s Sky Valley. According to San Jose Mercury News, the sentence for a guilty verdict on the charges ranges from probation to nine years in jail. Schwenn also has another misdemeanor cruelty case pending, and had previously been citied for failing to take care of her dogs.

?Yet she neglected to do so,? authorities said.

The 64-year-old was arrested at 9 am Thursday at the law library on Monroe Street in Indio, following a months-long investigation, and is being held on $50,000 bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the Larsen Justice Center, but court paperwork did not include an attorney?s name. Schwenn cannot ask for a court-appointed counsel until her arraignment.

District Attorney?s spokesman John Hall said that animal control received reports of neglected animals and found 30 dead or sick puppies and adult dogs. Ten more were seized from the property Thursday.

District Attorney Paul Zellerbach said his office ?takes these types of situations seriously and will continue to vigorously prosecute cases of animal cruelty.?

In St. Louis, a 35-year-old woman was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty after bragging online about killing her shepherd-terrier mix. On July 9, Adrienne Martin posted on Facebook, ?I?m on killa mode? kill dogs? today.? A few days later, on July 14, she posted, ?MF?s is killing me about this stupid dog?.keep it real?you didn?t take care nor like or love the MF?on the TV str8 lies?#laughingeveryday?.stop b*tch..?

Stray Rescue of St. Louis named the dog Brownie and did everything they could to save him, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries and died from organ failure.

Do you think nine years is a long enough sentence for 30 counts of animal cruelty?

Solid Fundamentals Remain for Health Care REITs and Senior Housing: An Exclusive Interview with Analyst Daniel Bernstein on His Top Picks in the Space

67 WALL STREET, New York - July 25, 2013 - The Wall Street Transcript has just published its Medical Real Estate Report offering a timely review of the sector to serious investors and industry executives. This special feature contains expert industry commentary through in-depth interviews with public company CEOs and Equity Analysts. The full issue is available by calling (212) 952-7433 or via The Wall Street Transcript Online.

Topics covered: REIT Access to Capital - Affordable Care Act and Reimbursements - Hospitals, Senior Housing, Skilled Nursing and Acute Care - Medicare and Medicaid Reimbursements - Consolidation Activity - Health Care REITs

Companies include: Health Care REIT Inc. (HCN), BioMed Realty Trust Inc. (BMR), Capital Senior Living Corp. (CSU), Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (BKD), Emeritus Corp. (ESC) and many more.

In the following excerpt from the Medical Real Estate Report, an expert analyst discusses the outlook for the sector for investors:

TWST: What are your stock recommendations right now?

Mr. Bernstein: Our top pick today is Health Care REIT (HCN) in the REIT sector. It's an $18 billion market cap health care REIT. Post their acquisition of Revera Properties in Canada, they're getting about 38% of their NOI from seniors housing operating assets, so we think the portfolio will benefit from rising interest rates, and again, the good underlying fundamentals in seniors housing.

We also like the company's relationship-driven acquisition model. Although they've done a number of large acquisitions in the past couple of years, they don't rely on those large acquisitions for growth. They get a significant amount of acquisitions from their existing relationships at better-than-market prices, and so we continue to see them be attractive with 5% better FFO and FAD growth, similar dividend growth and a potential for them to continue to improve their valuation versus peers.

TWST: And in the other subsectors?

Mr. Bernstein: The other pick that we have, and this is a company that I cover without Rob, is BioMed (BMR). It is primarily a company that invests in life science assets, biotech lab space. It has improved its balance sheet dramatically; it's sub-40% leverage. It continues to lease up its assets. It has diversified its tenant base, and it's growing FFO/FAD 6% to 7% a year. We think the company is trading at a discount to net asset value, and may even be a potential acquisition target for a large-cap health care REIT, so we like them as well.

In the other sectors, our favorite seniors housing pick is Capital Senior Living (CSU). It's a little bit more growth than value. Capital Senior is a small-cap company; market cap is roughly $675 million, but it is a top-20 operator of seniors housing assets...

Twitter has overhauled the search function for its apps on Android and iOS, allowing users to expand searches for people beyond just their names to include additional information and their profile picture, the microblogging network has announced.

This should make it easier to find friends, celebrities and acquaintances. To access the new search, users will have to upgrade their Twitter programme.

The update will also allow messages to be synchronised across devices, meaning an item read on a smartphone will be noted as such on a desktop. Until now, they would appear as unread on the one, even if read on the other.

But, to use this function, both users have to use the most up-to-date Twitter apps and programmes.

Google lists Chromecast as a device in support docs, quickly removes it

We're on the eve of a Google event with Sundar Pichai, and while we have some idea of what we'll see, the folks in Mountain View might've just shown us some of their other cards. Droid Life spotted "Chromecast" listed as a device on Google Play's support docs, but the entry has since been removed. The outlet speculates -- with the help of an anonymous tipster, of course -- that Chromecast is related to a TV dongle dubbed Chromekey, which streams content from mobile devices to television sets. What's more, a Droid Life reader chatted with a Google Play support representative who mentioned that "Chromecast is a TV service that's provided in some areas." The whole picture is fairly murky at this point, but we're hoping things will become clearer tomorrow.

LEGION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS: Plymouth routs Wareham

Plymouth?s Alex Rozak continued his outstanding run Monday night, pitching a commanding complete game and leading Post 40 to a 12-2 route of Wareham Post 220 in six innings at Siever Field.

Rozak also had three doubles and three RBIs and scored the winning run.

He struck out seven.

Wareham scored the first two runs of the game. The first came on a sacrifice fly by Luke Mattar, who leads the team with 14 RBI.

Sam Bacchiocchi drove in the second run with an RBI single to center. Wareham led 2-0 in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third, Wareham pitcher Ian Gray threw six straight balls, then gave up a two-run homer to Nick McFarland, tying the score at 2-2.

A close call in the bottom of the fourth turned the game around.

Ted Savage hit a grounder to first for Plymouth, and appeared to be beaten to the bag. The umpire called him safe.

?One play can turn things around,? Plymouth coach Ed Rozak said of the safe call.

Alex Rozak came to the plate next and doubled to center to drive in Savage.

Joe Kingsbury singled to left. A perfectly executed squeeze play with Connor Follette at the plate scored Rozak.

?We actually use it quite a bit,? coach Ed Rozak said about the squeeze play. ?When the opportunity presents itself, we take advantage. They used it quite consistently in high school.?

Kingsbury scored on a wild pitch, and Plymouth led 5-2.

In the fifth, Savage scorched a two-run double to make it 7-2, ending Gray?s night.

Rozak added a two-run double. McFarland and Ryan Moskos both had RBI singles. Plymouth used 11 batters in the fifth to blow open the game, 11-2.

Rozak doubled to center again in the bottom of the sixth. Kingsbury?s bloop hit to center scored Rozak and Plymouth walked off with a 12-2 mercy-rule win in six innings.

With the 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, Plymouth travels to Wareham today with a chance to advance.

?We?re pretty good, pitching-wise,? Ed Rozak said. ?Wareham is a really good team. They?ll come at you. If we play like we did today, we?ll be in good shape.?

A Petite Introduction

[unable to retrieve full-text content]I would like to start out by complimenting this entire website and forums and it's moderating team.It has been many years since I have been in the roleplaying scene and there weren't many roleplaying websites or forums in those days. It seemed there were the original, tried-and-true sources for roleplaying and a bunch of failed imitations. I can, however, personally claim that this is the most advanced and well-established source for roleplaying in these days. As I approached my old passions for fantasy roleplay, having started with table top and online roleplaying that was Warhammer Fantasy based, I expected to find little or no solid home the type of in-depth roleplaying which I was searching for. These forums, the construction and organization, and last but most certainly not least, the moderating team which serves as the back-bone for such a great place, are all applauded and honored by myself. I wish you all the best, as you deserve it.I cannot wait to get to know many of you more and be able to enjoy roleplaying with you as well.

Afghan women write powerful poetry ? even amid war

The Afghan Women?s Writing Project collects oral stories from illiterate Afghan women and promotes political writing by women in digital, print, and radio forms.

By Leigh Cuen,?Dowser / July 22, 2013

Women listen to a speech by Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai in Kabul in May 2013. The Afghan Women?s Writing Project is helping women express their thoughts and opinions through poetry. But the identity of women poets must be carefully guarded for their own safety.

Omar Sobhani/Reuters/File

Despite constant dangers, Afghan women?s poetry continues to flourish. One outlet for women?s poetry is Mirman Baheer, Afghanistan?s largest literary society for women. Mirman Baheer operates in Kabul with over 100 members. Its members are generally educated and employed; they are professors, parliamentarians, journalists, and scholars.

Approximately 300 of Miram Baheer?s members live in the outlying provinces ? Khost, Paktia, Maidan Wardak, Kunduz, Kandahar, Herat, and Farah ? where the group functions in secret. Many who cannot safely travel to meet together listen to radio programs broadcast by Mirman Baheer and the Afghan Women?s Writing Project.

?We recruit only through word-of-mouth and delete any content that might be used to identify our writers,? says Richelle McClain, director of the Afghan Women?s Writing Project.

The Afghan Women?s Writing Project (AWWP) was founded in 2009. Today, 160 Afghan women across five provinces are enrolled in AWWP?s workshops, including a new workshop for teenagers and a Dari writing program. While security is an omnipresent concern, dwindling financial support is one of their greatest challenges. ?We just lost 75 percent of our funding because of the US withdrawal,? says McClain.

In addition to radio broadcasts and writing programs, the AWWP collects oral stories from illiterate Afghan women, which are edited and published on the organization?s blog.

Before the 2014 elections in Afghanistan, the AWWP plans to partner with IFES Afghanistan (International Foundation for Electoral Systems) to promote political writings by local women through digital, print, and radio networks. They will also run special broadcasts featuring interviews with female candidates and programs about how election results will impact Afghan citizens.

For many rural women in Afghanistan, these secret networks and the poetry broadcasts are their only form of education. U.N. investigations revealed that only 12 percent of Afghan women are literate.

But thanks to volunteer translators and journalists contemporary Afghan women?s poetry can now reach global audiences. For example, the June 2013 issue of Poetry magazine was dedicated to landays ? vitriolic, two-line verses traditionally recited by Afghan women at the river, the well, or private gatherings.

This collection came from years of investigative reporting by journalist Eliza Griswold. She journeyed to Afghanistan with photographer and filmmaker Seamus Murphy. On July 30, 2013, the Pulitzer Center will host ?I Am the Beggar of the World,? a presentation of Griswald and Murphy?s work at the Culture Project in New York City.

A free exhibit at the Poetry Foundation Gallery in Chicago, "Shame Every Rose:?Images of Afghanistan," features many of these landays and images. The exhibit is open to the public through August.

?Sharing this poetry could endanger the poets? lives,? says Don Share, editor of Poetry magazine. ?Still, they gave these poems willingly.?

The tradition of landays provides some level of anonymity for women because they are collective. They are recited and shared rather than attributed to a single poet.

Even so, in modern Afghanistan, poetry can be dangerous. Over the past year, several young Afghan poets were killed by their male relatives. A young Mirman Baheer member who called herself Rahila Muska burned herself to death in protest after her brothers found her writing poetry and brutally attacked her. Her real name was Zarmina. She often recited this landay over the phone to members of Miram Baheer:

?You sold me to an old man, Father.

"May God destroy your home, I was your daughter.?

Landays derive their power from shrewd layers of tension between the poet?s inner and outer world. They can explore rage, sarcasm, irony, loss, separation, and desire. Many of the poems are humorous, filled with bawdy sexual imagery.

Whatever the subject, a landay lilts from word to word in a short lullaby with scathing, layered meaning. These poems come from a long legacy of Afghan women?s literature.

?The Afghan woman poet predates the American or European female poet,? says Zohra Saed, an Afghan-American poet living in New York City. ?Consider the poet queen Rabia Balkhi.? Legend has it this 11th-century Afghan used her last drop of blood to write poems.

?Afghan women?s poetry is unique because it must respond to create change,? says Saed. ?Within our communities and also to change outside perceptions. It is the poetry of witness, of trauma, of memory, and of struggle to be seen as individuals.?

Saed recounted the time she edited a collection of literature by Afghan writers around the world. Before it was finished, an American radio station published a CD of the collection without her permission. They listed her as the editor and printed a photograph of an impoverished child on the cover.

?When people are interested in Afghan women?s poetry, it is presented as poetry by the same women the world has imagined rescuing over the past 20 years,? Saed says.

She took legal action to recall the copyrighted anthology, then focused it exclusively on Afghan-American writers. ?There were also women poets who were not part of the war,? she says. ?Writers raised abroad, their aesthetics and poetic voice is very different.?

Today, Afghan literature is fragmented by linguistic, cultural, and geographic divides. Some of the world?s most prominent Afghan writers live outside their fatherland and write in English. Many female writers in Afghanistan come from the urban elite, often educated in Western universities. Poems by women in rural Afghanistan are rarely published. Groups like the Afghan Women?s Writing Project and the Poetry Foundation are working to bridge this divide.

?Poetry is not only for the classroom and elite art circles,? says Mr. Share, editor of Poetry magazine. ?Poetry is an essential part of life, the only way these women can share their experiences. These poems are electrifying and relevant.?

He hopes readers will realize that, even in the digital age, poetry can wield tangible power.

'Kick-Ass' stuntmen save suicidal woman at Comic-Con

Pop culture

San Diego's Comic-Con is full of regular folk in superhero costumes. But on Thursday a real life set of heroes didn't need to dress up to help a suicidal woman off of an apartment complex's balcony near the convention, according to reports.

Stuntmen Amos Carver, Gregg Sergeant and Scot Schecter, who work for Stunts 911, were setting up a scaffolding for a movie premiere party to promote "Kick-Ass 2" near the building when the woman ? reportedly upset over a breakup ? stepped onto the 14th floor balcony and began climbing over the railing. Carver later told press, "She was hanging on (the balcony) with one hand, and had one foot off the ledge."

Down below, a small crowd had formed and began filming, some perhaps thinking this was all part of the stunt. 10News San Diego noted that members of the crowd screamed "don't jump" and "somebody get in there and help her."

The stuntmen dropped what they were doing, scaled a fence and got permission to enter the building from the building's manager. The woman's apartment was unlocked, and they were able to get in behind her without being heard. Sargent caught her in a "hug" with both arms, and Carer and Scott put a harness on her to keep her in place.

"She was ready to go," Sargent said later.

"She just kept saying, 'I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry,' over and over again," Carver said. "She was very distraught."

Police arrived soon after that.

"I was just so thankful we got there when we got there," said Sargeant. "I think if we'd been there two seconds later, she would've been gone," said Sargent.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock?s call for more affordable housing in Denver (2 letters)

With a rail car behind him, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock delivers his State of the City address at the Forney Museum of Transportation on July 15. (Cyrus McCrimmon,The Denver Post)

Re: ?Denver Mayor Michael Hancock goes global in state of the city address,? July 16 news story.

It is exciting that Denver Mayor Michael Hancock highlighted the need for affordable housing during his state of the city address last Monday. While some Denver residents are doing well, other face more difficult times. According to the most recent census data, 10 percent of families living in Denver earn less than $15,000 a year and half of the residents living in Denver are renters.

Denver?s Inclusionary Housing Ordinance is a great start in the endeavor to provide affordable housing. Without it, many families would not be able to purchase homes. But Denver residents need more. Working families need an ordinance that goes further and includes both affordable rental and for-sale units.

We?re so fortunate to have a mayor who has ?the audacity to believe that anyone who wants to live in the city should not be forced out because of costs.? Hopefully we?ll see the comprehensive policies that will make that belief a reality.

Amanda Gonzalez, Denver

The writer is a policy analyst and staff attorney for FRESC: Good Jobs, Strong Communities.

This letter was published in the July 22 edition.

According to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, it is up to businesses, banks and non-profits to solve the problem of less affordable housing projects by building more affordable housing projects. Really? How about Hancock?s office partnering with these entities to educate low-income citizens on how to open their own businesses, to teach basic business principles of hiring, creating jobs and making a profit so people can then afford to live where they want?

Citizens of Denver not only want to see fewer low-income housing projects, but most do not want to live in or near them. Why do we continue to hear from government officials that the solution to these kinds of ?low-income problems? is more ?low-income solutions?? When will we elect men and women who tout civic answers that are grounded in individual initiative and business acumen instead of LBJ?s old, tired ?War on Poverty??

?Britannia roar? coming to a stadium near you ? thanks to first-of-its-kind free coach travel for Stoke away games

Free away travel? Stoke's Britannia roar coming to a stadium near you
Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes, manager Mark Hughes and chairman Peter Coates are all hoping the away coach travel scheme will get more fans supporting the team on their travels (Picture: Getty)

Since the inception of the Premier League 20 years ago, fans up and down the country have complained about television money ruining the game.

With ever-inflating ticket prices, exhorbitant transfer fees and salaries and matches shown on subscription channels, it?s easy to see why fans feel disenchanted in these tough economic times.

So, on the same day that Fifa announced the cost of the 2014 World Cup tickets (from ?288, if you?re interested), it was a refreshing change to hear a club publicly declare that they were putting some of their television income back into fans? pockets.

Like many clubs, Stoke have offered discounts on occasional away games. A new initiative offering free coach travel to all away games, however, is believed to be the first of its kind in the top four flights of English league football.

There?s no hiding from the fact that the cost of supporting your club has increased over recent years, with the BBC even compiling a Price of Football?survey a few weeks ago in May. And, while many opposition fans see Stoke City as a ?joke? club and undeserving of their Premier League status, there?s no doubting that their latest statement has the club?s fans at its heart.

Hughes could draw on [a doubled away] support to imitate on the road what has been achieved at the Britannia

With unemployment in the Stoke-on-Trent conurbation still relatively high, Potters fans must have been shocked when the club announced at the end of last season that ? once again ? season ticket prices would remain the same.

Despite the club remaining in the Premier League, it appears the club?s accountants have done all they possibly can to make the game affordable for its fans. The club continues to rely on its intimidating home atmosphere to scare any opponents coming to the Britannia Stadium, and a big part of ensuring those fans keep returning is the relatively low cost of the matchday tickets.

There is no hiding, too, from the fact that the team have a miserable away record in the Premier League.

Last season, Stoke accrued just 14 points on the road ? winning just twice and scoring a measly 13 goals. The season before just 16 points were accrued, and two goals fewer scored.

When you combine the poor form then, with the cost of an away ticket plus travel, it?s easy to understand why fans can be reluctant to throw away over ?2,000 on 19 ?days out? each season.

One can only assume the club are hoping that by halving the cost of the day out, at least double the amount of fans will follow the club around the country. In turn, Hughes could draw on that support to imitate on the road what has been achieved at the Britannia.

The initiative promises to be a positive step by the club?s PR team, and no doubt will be watched with interest by the other ?small teams? in the Premier League.

'We've got to be as thorough as can be'; Cleveland cops look for more victims after 3 women found in bags

A Cleveland suburb is on edge after police found the bodies of three women who may have been murdered by a serial killer, NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By Gil Aegerter and Andrew Rafferty, NBC News

Investigators in a Cleveland suburb have reason to believe they will find more victims after the recent discovery of three bodies wrapped in garbage bags, officials said Sunday.

?We?ve got to be as thorough as we can be,? East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts told volunteers gathered to search through vacant houses to look for more bodies.

?There may be one or two more victims,? he said.

Police will continue searching Sunday for more victims after three bodies believed to be female were found in a house in suburban Cleveland. A suspect who is a registered sex offender who has served prison time was arrested in connection with the case. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

And by late Sunday afternoon, authorities had blocked off an open lot in the neighborhood after finding another partially buried garbage bag, though investigators have not yet said what was in it.

Police arrested a suspect on Friday, hours after investigators found a woman?s body in a garage. Two more bodies were discovered Saturday ? one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house.

All the bodies were wrapped in garbage bags.

On Sunday, volunteers broke into teams of eight to check abandon homes near where the victims were found.

Spotts and East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton told the volunteers to be on alert for foul smells and to stay together when searching through the dark structures. If any of the volunteers found anything suspicious, they were told to contact authorities immediately.

?It might not look like it?s a body, but it could be. Because the way he had each body was in the fetal position,? Spotts told the group. ?It didn?t look like a person could fit in the bag.?

Norton also told the Associated Press that there were reasons to suspect more bodies would be found, but declined to elaborate on why.

"The person in custody, some of the things he said to investigators made us go back today," the mayor told the AP.

No identities were released, but all three victims were believed to have been killed in the past six to 10 days.?The bodies were found about 100 to 200 yards apart.?

A suspect was arrested after a standoff with police Friday. NBC station WKCY of Cleveland said police identified him as Michael Madison, 35.

The suspect has not yet been charged, Norton told the AP. ?He was a registered sex offender and had served prison time, the mayor added.

Nathenia Crosby, 48, said Madison was a neighbor who concerned her because of his interest in her daughter.

"It's very scary, especially when he used to be talking to my daughter," she told the Associated Press. "But I told him he was too old to be talking to my daughter because she was only 19. When I found out how old he was, I said, `You need to move on, she's too young.' "

East Cleveland, which is home to some 17,000 residents, has many abandoned houses and authorities want to be thorough, the mayor said.?

In police interviews, the man led them to believe he might have been influenced by convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell, Norton told the AP.?

"He said some things that led us to believe that in some way, shape, or form, Sowell might be an influence," the mayor said.

A 2009 serial killing shocked neighboring Cleveland. Police found the bodies of 11 women, ages 24 to 52, at Sowell's home. He was convicted and sentenced to death and remains in prison.

In court papers, prosecutors described Sowell as, "The worst offender in the history of Cuyahoga County and arguably the State of Ohio."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Baseball's Great Equalizer: The Knuckleball

If Bugs Bunny had a pitch, it would be the knuckleball. It weaves and bobs, zigs and zags, and acts like it has a mind of its own. Catchers have trouble catching this pitch. It leaves hitters dazed. Even the pitcher can't really say for sure what it's going to do. And that's the idea. It isn't a power pitch. It isn't a control pitch. It is, precisely, an uncontrol pitch.

The idea is to throw the ball with as little spin as possible. This lets the play of the air and wind along the ball's seams determine its trajectory. A good knuckleballer doesn't so much place the ball as he acts like a ball whisperer.

Here's the curious thing: no one in baseball sets out to be a knuckleballer. By and large, it is a pitch of last resort. You turn to it when all else fails ? when the fastball no longer pops and when no one is fooled by the change. Certainly this was the case with R.A. Dickey, who won 20 games and the Cy Young award last year pitching for the Mets. He may be the only knuckleballer in today's Major Leagues. He turned to the knuckleball ? started the long arduous process of learning to throw it ? to save a sagging career.

If the knuckleball can be so devilishly effective, why don't more pitchers cultivate it as part of their working arsenal? Or, at the very least, why aren't knuckleball specialists a more everyday part of the game?

The only answer I can come up with is that baseball, like life, isn't rational; things aren't always what they are supposed to be. In the culture of baseball ? at least our American baseball culture ? the knuckleball just isn't sexy.

But what if a young pitcher, someone still in little league, did set their sights on this pitch. What if someone devoted a whole career to it? This would be a species of baseball flower that may have never been seen before.

Watch the ESPN video below to learn about an unstoppable young pitcher, out of Florida, who is doing just this. The video's from 2010, but there's been no lag in the development of this young talent.

It's a long road from little league stardom the major leagues. But this knuckleballer has a better chance than most and her name is Chelsea Baker.

(Hat tip: Thanks to David Temple's excellent podcast Stealing Home, where I first learned about Chelsea Baker.)
